Campus Parking UGH!
I saw this article at CNN.com about parking on college campus's and I thought I'd add my own rant, because I definately have one!
At UNLV our parking permits cost $72. If you don't have a parking sticker in your window, it's a $35 fine. Now I have classes that don't begin until 10am and as a result, the parking spaces are all full. Lately, I've had to park on the top of the parking garage or WAY out in the corner of the parking lot. This means a good 5 minute walk to class. After I've already had to spend 10 minutes just finding a spot. Plus, my car is baking in the sun (and our wonderful 90 degree weather) reguardless of what shades I put on my window. This semester they've started doing construction RIGHT in the middle of the parking lot, taking away 1/4 of the parking lot (and trust me, it makes a difference) Now mind you, they didn't tear out the parking lot this summer when there were almost NO cars in the parking lot. Personally, I think $72 is a bit outragous for a parking spot! especially when it's out in the heat, and far away.

I thought I had it bad. $75 if you want to park at the Comisky Park Lot (which we rent from the White Sox) which is 5 blocks from camups. $300 to park ON campus.
Then I talked to my girlfriend. She pays $260 per month. Going to school in downtown Chicago is teh sux0r.

Killer Rabbit: as much as riding a bike sounds like a good idea, I live in Las Vegas.. and much like other busy towns, riding on the sidewalk is dangerous. I don't know if it's this way in other towns but our sidewalks are not the best made, they're skinny, especially if you pass a light pole. Plus, they are so cracked it's almost sad.

Biking in the city is only for the awful brave. You've heard the stories about the insane and rude bike-messangers we (and many other big cities) have? Well I biked downtown once. I came to the conclusion that they insane and rude to freakin' survive amongst all of the traffic nuts driving SUVs.
It's not pretty. I'd only bike if I had to.

I paid 40 for my permit. Its for the dorm parking so students off campus might have to pay more. But it doesnt seem like Purdue oversold their permits so its usually not to hard to find a spot.
I think the main problem is that students complain if they dont get a permit and they see open spaces in parking lots and students complain if they oversell them and there arent any open spots. The school probably sees it as "Damned if you do, damned if you dont." And they make more money by overselling. So what way would you choose if you were them?

Many universities these days don't really give a rat's ass about education. They're just money-mills used to fund their football teams. I think they just base their prices for permits on what they think they can get away sticking you with, not on any real relation to their own costs.
I lived in dorms most of my college days and just walked to all of my classes. My first apartment was a 15 minute walk away, so I didn't worry much about driving.

Ask a silly question I know, but do you HAVE to take the car?
What's the public transport sitch like in Vegas? I have to take a train, a tube and a ten minute walk to Uni which, although is a pure pisher when it's raining (virtually all the time), gives me a lot of time to read or to do assignments.

Pretty much the only reason I have a car is to go home once in a while (5 hour drive, so not very often). So far I've only driving my car about once a week. Usually a trip I wouldnt mind taking to bus on but the car is a little quicker and it doesnt hurt to drive it once in a while instead of having it sit there for weeks/months. Two main benifits:
1. Doesnt take a three hour (round trip) bus ride to spend 15 minutes in Best Buy.
2. Its either $20 for gas to go home, a 12 hour $100 bus ride or a $200 flight which you spend more time in the airport than in the air, or a $100 12 hour train ride. Hmmm...what to choose...

Cars are pretty nessessary, especially if I have things that I HAVE to do after school, I'm an Elementry Education Major and we have to help teach at an elementry school after classes on MWF. Taking public transportation THERE would take me at least 3 hours. Driving alone takes me about 30 - 45. Public Transportation from my house isn't as bad luckily, it would be a straight shot down Tropicana.. but, the bus doesn't exactly attract the best people, so riding it is a bit risky sometimes. Cars are a nessessary evil, I deal with walking 5 minutes extra to class because, I don't have a lot of options.
