What I find annoying is that blacks will get onto whites for using it, saying they're racist (another peeve is "racist" is often used when "bigoted" is the most correct term in that situation). But then that same set of black people will refer to themselves as such.
Personally, I don't use the word.. but these days I consider it to carry a certain connotation beyond a person simply being black. To me, "nigger" for a black person is the same as "white trash" for a white person. My wife's mother uses it in that sense. It always grates on my nerves when she does use it, but I can see what she means when she does. She's not saying nigger = all blacks. She's saying nigger = those blacks that give the others a bad name by sponging off of welfare and paying for food with food stamps while trying to dial their cell phones with sculpted nails. Conversely, for whites, we have people behaving the same way.. we just call them white trash.

Tell them to get rid of "gook" while they're at it, not that it ever really bothered me. I've been called a gook before, but I usually corrected them by saying that gook meant "Vietnamese." Not my RDC in boot camp, though
