Nein. (1034)

Talk about today's strip, or anything about the comic in general. You can also talk about any of the characters... but don't expect a response. They're FICTIONAL, you guys... sheesh. :)

I don't get the joke either, is there a story behind? Can someone explain the joke to a stupid german guy (that would be me)?

btw, "Nein" means simply "No", in case you didn't understand that german word.

I'm not familiar with the Sacremento area at all (I'm waaaaaaay on the other side of the country), but my guess is that Davis is one of those richy rich fenced in neighborhoods and Greg was trying to get in there for food and they wouldn't let him in. But that's just a guess.

The people's republic of Davis ... hm somehow the people of Davis must be kinda strange, if Greg thinks they deserve to be called communists. On the other hand, the guy with his uniform and the "nein" somewhat resemble a nazi... if things are like that in Davis (nazi communists patrolling the streets), this is surely the last place to visit if I shall ever come to CA again...

Okay, here's my take.

Davis is a little ways west of sactown. I grew up between the two.

Davis is very... hippie I think is a good word. This is home to UC Davis, and many very "green" (in both ways) activities and activists. There are many laws in Davis about what you can't do there; they were one of the first places to ban smoking outright (I mean period...) as I recall.

I also remember going there with my brother in his 1978 Camero Z28 and getting glared  at. I hardly saw any other V8 cars there. And everyone rides bikes (it's a fairly small town and everyone goes to the University) so cars are discouraged in general. At least thats how it was 10 years ago, and my experiences there were limited. </disclaimer>

Not sure if it is the general attitude or some specific event which inspired Greg. Can't wait to hear.

Dude, I totally got it . . . andI don't live anywhere near there! Don't you guys live in areas where major political/ethnic/religious/educational/income oriented segregation occurs? Ever wondered what would happen if they just shut themselves out of the community?

"That will happen," in my town of Minneola, FL... :( They (city commissioners) already have plans for a "Disney Utopia" here.

Yeah, it made sense to me too. And if you read Greg's comments down below, you will see that he didn't expect many people to get it. Kind of like this one which people didn't get either. But now the more I look at it, the more I like it and laugh!!

Of course. Don't expect Greg to explain this one. In fact, don't expect him to explaine a comic ever again.

Hi, I'm currently going to school in Davis, I didn't get it. As far as I know there is no ban on smoking in Davis except for the statewide ban on smoking in restaurant and the ban on smoking within twenty fee of UC buildings (which applies to all campuses).

Yes most people in Davis own and use bicycles, but then again people have cars too. I ride my bike to class and drive my car when I need to get anywhere and feel lazy. Except for the bikes and the smell of cattle in certain places (Davis is also an agricultural town and the college was once the University Farm School), it is pretty much a regular college town.

Which leads me back to where I started, I don't get it. If anyone else has insight please feel free to help me out.

Well, considering Davis is a very small town, and by the sound of it rather conservative, I can relate to this comic.

There have been several times when I've gone to small towns in the middle of nowhere, and have been accused of vandalism, grand theft auto, and shoplifting, all for stopping and using a payphone! ...It's a long story...

Small town people can tend to be very paranoid of outsiders. Especially ones with a face like Greg's.

Mike- you live there, you need to take an outsiders POV to really get it. The "Peoples Republic of" part was a very nice touch, by the way.

I, for the record, got it.

Eh, Davis is LIBERAL. A conservative in Davis is like a needle in a haystack. I had a very devout, church-going friend go to school there for four years, he came out a socialist sympathizer. Like a "ban religion and impose martial law" socialist.

I'm not saying that's all that happens there, that's just the extent of how it can get.

<flood gates>Should also mention that conservatives (for the most part) believe in personal responsiblity, and let people keep their freedoms; those who abuse or violate them are dealt with by their community. The liberals are the ones who trust no one and pass laws to ensure what they define as "socially unacceptable behavior" can't happen, eclipsing or eliminating our liberties and rights in the process.</flood gates>
