Got a Local?

Post by Garr_The_Sane » Sun Oct 05, 2003 10:19 pm

I was thinking,... round here there's a couple of pubs I genrally count as one of my "locals",. where i'm fairly well known by others who work there or just happen to be in the area,.

so, you got any pub/bar/club/coffee-house you count as you local?,. if so, what's it called and why do you like it? :)

Personally my two fav pubs I hang around fairly regularly,....

The HogsHead: a nice place, in the old 15th C. warf building in town near the castle,... low rooffed with reasonably priced beer and a couple of pool tables,. very nice in the summer with old loading doors open out onto the river,.. can get alittle chilly in the winter when they don't have the fire going.

WeatherSpoons: another nice place, on the opposite side of the river to The HogsHead, and much bigger and abit more modern,... good food there, and nice big gas fire in the winter,. and a lovely beer garden opposite the castle in the summer,..... but saddly, no music, pool table or tv,.... but has a nice atmospher when it gets busy in the evening,...

Well, There's The Millennium, which is about 2 minutes walk from my house, but frankly, its horrible, and is only used in cases of extreme lazyness. (Although, I went to school with most of the bar staff, so the service is good)

Then, if you go into Swords village (about a mile from my house, but only at the end of the estate I live in) theres at least 7 or 8 pubs in a straight line, but they're filtered out like this:
in one place the bouncers only let yuppies in, they don't like us students.
Another is an absolute dump, but it has good bands every week, although we don't go there, as my mate is barred (he didnt do it, but he was rude about it)
Another is HUGE (5 bars, holds about 2,000), and hugely popular, i don't like it, as its always full of posers
S few are traditional smokey "Aul Lad's Pubs"
and then theres our Locals of choice,
The Slaughtered Lamb (but I havent been in since they imposed and then swiftly de-imposed a foolish over 23's only rule)
and The Star (Dingey, but has good pool tables, lots of space, and a great jukebox)
"Face it, you're two nipples away from being human."
Did you imagine the final sound as a gun? Or the shattered windows of a car? Did you ever imagine the last thing you'd hear as you're fading out was a song?

Jeesh Garr! Both your locals are chain-pubs?!
My local is a Hotel (The Redstones). This means flexible drinking hours
Also the majority of the staff are eighteen year old girls in waistcoats

I have a couple of pubs close to me...

The White Horse... a traditional local pub, horse brasses and everything, but the landlord is the father of a friend of mine and I used to work there when I was younger so I know all the locals. the food is good solid, basic pub grub.

The Cock Inn... I know it sounds like all sorts of various puns but it is a sorta trendy type place where the local beautiful people go of an evening, asI live quite close to a v.v. affluent area then its quite nice to go and just watch them loving both themselves and each other... the food there is bloody brilliant and most of the local football teams go there post match, these teams being Aston Villa, Birmingham City, West Brom, Wlasall and Wolves.

There area whole bunch of other pubs nearby but they are all chains and I find them soulless and generically a bit shite....

I tend to avoid the Hogshead and JD Weatherspoon chains because they purchase their alchohol with short sell by date on them and then push em through, this often means that the beer is not kept well, or is out of date... also they tend to use Guiness to increase the longevity of the head on their bitters.
... and God disappeared in a puff of logic...

Rorschach, saddly yes,........ the hogshead didn't used to be until it got brought out a couple of years back,... always been calle dthe Hogshead (the hog is kinda the town symbol, it's all over the town's coat of arms),. but undervarious managements,......... and spoons,..well,. they serve absinthe!!!

unfortunately all the o ther pubs round here are alittle too grotty,.. if I head over to the next town, there's asoem REALLY nice indipendant pubs,. including one wonderful place with part of it actually built into a natural cave formation :D

Lira...it's a nice open place (only good in the summers) - 10 min walk from here ...it sucks when the weather sucks because the inside is very small and can get crowded

Slon(means Elephant in english)...it's a place when me and my co-workers go for a cup of coffee during the breaks...it's a nice quiet place where you can talk (it's like a 20 second walk from where I work - it's in the same building)

Kavka (it's a bird specie)...That's where I usually go at weekends to hang out in the evening with my friends...the service knows us and it's not filled with children...it's a 20 min walk from here but we usually drive there

CC...If Kavka is closed then we go here and the place is very quiet so we go there during the weekend nights if you want a quiet chat with someone

others just like...suck

Horizon Diner - Non-chain diner. Good food. Cheap. Bottomless coffee. Yum.

Spruce Street Grill - Expensive, but has a great bar. They let minors sit there. Serve no alcohol to them though.

Tiffany's - another diner.

More diners.

Most of the diners are on Rt. 17, so I have to drive there. I could walk to the Grill, but it would take like.. 30-45 minutes. So I drive. There arn't many interesting places around here that are in walking distance.
