Internet Explorer problems..

Post by Ary » Sat Oct 25, 2003 7:40 pm

Allright.. here's the thing. Since a few days ago, my internet explorer has been acting really weird. Whenever I click on a link in MSN, MSN freezes for about 10 seconds and the webpage doesn't show up untill it unfreezes. When I click on a link that opens a pop-up window, IE freezes. When I right click on the thing in the Start-bar, it shows up immediately. Also pages that have pop-ups screw up.
My IE version is:
6.0.2800.1106.xpsp2.030422-1633

Oh, I also ran a full virus scan with Norton Antivirus 2003, with updated Virus Definitions. I also ran a scan for trojans with a shareware program from download.com.

First clear out your internet files. That's most likely the problem.

billf's probably right. It sounds like a Temporary Internet Files issue, though it could also be an issue with the history or the cookies where the index file has become corrupted.

So clear Internet Files and cookies? If so, where do I clear my cookies? Or do I have to do that manually?

EDIT: Links do open through IRC.

EDIT2: Awesome, it's working now! Thanks for the help, guys. =)

EDIT3: .. It's still not really working. Popups still make the explorer freeze and I still can't access my Inbox through MSN. Windows Update also doesn't show up. :S

Bah. I always had problems when I used internet exploder. I switched to Mozilla, and havent looked back. Firebird is nice too, especially if you have a slower computer, it will run a lot faster (less than 1 ghz id say) than mozilla. Its basically a stripped down version of Mozilla, without all the extra stuff mozilla ships with (mail client, address book, irc program, etc)

Internet files, cookies, and history are all cleared from the same panel from Tools | Internet Options.

Best popup blocker for IE is Google Toolbar.

What happens when you go to Windows Update? You may need to go to Internet Options | Advanced, and scroll to the bottom and make sure that SSL 2.0 and SSL 3.0 are checked. In the past, there was an occasion where I had to select TLS 1.0 to get Windows Update to work, but I'm not sure why, since it's not normally required.

It's not that I don't have a popupblocker, it shows up for a second and then gets closed. The thing is that when it shows up for a quick second it freezes. And Windows Update just doesn't do anything. When I click on it I get the mouse+hourglass thing for a quick second and then it just doesn't do anything. I just cleared Internet Files, Cookies & History.. didn't help though. The TLS 1.0 also didn't work.

I'd rather stick to IE than changing to Mozilla.

Allright.. so I cleared history, cookies & temporary internet files. It worked for a while, but after a reboot it started fucking up again. Any ideas? Only sites I've visited were sites I've visited long before the problem, so the visited sites can't be a problem.. can they?

How much free drive space do you have on the drive Internet Explorer is located on? If that is low (depending on your HD, but personally I like to keep about 20% of the drive free) then try and clean out some old junk you don't need or can at least stick on another drive.

Did you set the default language like Topcat suggested?
