I still can't get onto the Phoenix server no matter how hard I try. However, I think I've found the fastest method to try getting on.
This method is based on two things. As far as I can tell, the system determines the 'Not Specified' server when you choose to create a new character from the main screen. It sets this server in memory for you until you return to the main screen where it will rechoose a server. Next thing to note is that it checks to see if the name you've chosen exists already on that server right after you choose your name and server. There will be a quick window with a metre and it will check it then. So what does all this mean.
The method to use is this:
Choose your race and job and all that, but choose a fairly unique name that you know exists on the Phoenix server such as 'Sagus' or 'Calaeriel'. Next choose the default 'Not Specified' server and then watch the screen. If it takes you to the screen where it asks for your home kingdom, then just hit Esc back two screens to the main screen for you've got the wrong server. If it tells you that the name is invalid for it has already been taken, then you MIGHT have the Phoenix server. Just go and change the name to one you want and go through with choosing your kingdom and all that. At the point where it asks to choose a handle, just Esc from there. Go to the Delete Character screen to see which server you've been assigned. If it's Phoenix, then congrats. If not, then delete the character and start again.
The most important thing to do is to go back to the main page to reset the 'Not Specified' server. Once you've set the race and gender and name and such, they'll stay that way until you changed them. Than means for the most part you can just hit Enter really quickly through the character creation screen. With this method, I can run through it about 3 times a minute. The only problem is that even at that rate I still can't find the Phoenix server.
Anyhow, I hope this helps and you have better luck than me. If there is any flaw to this system, let me know.
If anyone wants to just give me a worldpass, that would be great
Good luck!
Edit: I got a world pass and I'm on Phoenix now.

This had better be the best tasting beer in the world... You got lucky!
Myself and and a friend used the method that greg's associate recommended, and it took my friend about 8 minutes and myself about 30 to get phoenix. Oddly enough, i managed to dig ragnarok up about 5 times. this struck me as odd because from what i heard its one of the most highly populated servers. Perhaps it really is all just luck.

Really? Only that long? That's pretty quick.Myself and and a friend used the method that greg's associate recommended, and it took my friend about 8 minutes and myself about 30 to get phoenix. I've been trying and trying with no luck.
I am curious how it determines the server. I'm assuming the 'random' choice is probably based on things like how populated the server is, but I wonder if it is based on the ping rate or whatever...
By the way Jushiro, when did you and your friend create the character?

I tried that for a while too, but it didn't seem to work for me. As far as I can tell, the server is determined for the session, and doesn't change until you finish creating a character or until you reenter the game.
I wound up just creating/deleting/creating until I got on to Phoenix. Of course, then I found that for some unknown reason, my computer runs the fog backwards on FFXI. I checked in UT2003, and the fog works there. So I can't play FFXI because everything near me is just a large grey mass. I can see buildings in the distance, but nothing close to me.
Oh well - but I wound up in Phoenix... if I can ever get it to work, maybe I'll see some of you there. *grumbles* (Oh, and latest drivers for my NVidia GeForce FX 5600 card, if anyone can help me

Re: FFXI: Phoenix Memberlist
Hi all, I joined the LS tonight but I had a Star Wars D20 game to play, so I had to run. Hope to see everyone soon and maybe eventually get to a level where partying is a good thing.
BTW, it took me about an hour of creating characters to get onto the Phoenix server. It's entirely possible it is getting harder and harder to get on Phoenix if they weight the server selection based on how populated servers are. If this is the case, you might consider trying to create characters at non-peak times when most of the Real Lifers are sleeping. Just a guess, though.
