FFXI Questions and Answer Thread.
I'm starting to think of the Windows key as the "fast logout" key. You need to log out of the game, so you start the logout process, but you can't wait the 30 seconds. Punch the Windows key, and you're magically back at the PlayOnline viewer! (Of course, your character still has to wait the 30 seconds, but you don't have to watch it.)
I'm not really advocating this, mind you... Log out normally, please!

Okay, anyone know where I can get a linkshell on the Phoenix server, and how much it costs?
Shirt Ninja's is full (no surprise there
) and I've been trolling major fan sites, and I can only find one other linkshell on all of Phoenix.
Time to change this.

Alright, I dunno how long it's gonna take me to get a reply, but it's worhth a shot here anyways
I recently bought FFXI and a some more ram so I could play. I was installing PlayOnline and FFXI for 4 HOURS last night, I go tp play after registering 3 times and I get this error message
"Terminated as error occured in FINAL FANTASY XI. Failed to recognize Hardware TnL."
Then it says to check my system to make sure it can run the game
I have a 1.6 GHz Athalon, 480 DDR RAM, a 60 Gig HD, and a 32 MB S3 ProSavageDDR graphics card, I exceed the minimum requirements in some areas (not the video card but it DOES meet the minimum) and exceed it in other areas, why am I getting a hardware error ???
Also, when I got to the FFXI Config thing I dont se anything, please help because my precious free month is winding down as I type...

It may be the video card. I don't think that particular chipset is supported, despite the RAM.
Your system is virtually identical to my own, the one exception being the video card. It runs swimmingly on mine.
It COULD be an imcompatible RAM problem. Make sure the chip density matches, and check your MoBo specs to be sure there isn't some conflict between your two chips. FFXI may be the first to show it, but it if you try other memory intsensive programs, you should see similar errors.
Honestly, though, I'd bet on it being the video card. Try updating the drivers first though, just in case its something that simple.

Hey all,
First time posting but a VERY long time reader (since it began, great job Greg, support comming through PAYPAL soon!). Now, on to my question...
I just recived my copy of the game earlier today and instantly tried to install it on my computer. Playonline went swimmingly but once I started to install the game itself...sigh...
I double clicked to get the setpup going and the FFXI install banner came up with the little "InstallShield" status box in the reight corner doing its thing. Suddenly it paused and closed itself and a dialog box came up with something along the lines of "1064: InstallShield could not start Windows installer" (sorry I'm at work at the moment and can't remember the whole thing at the moment, I'll try to post it once I get off).
I've had to wait a little over a week for it to get here and I don't want to send it back to EB for another one. Any Ideas? Bad disc? Help Please!

It would greatly help if you could remember the exact error code/message, because I'm basically making a wild guess without it, but I'll throw this out there anyway.
It sounds like the Windows Installer on your system has become messed up in some way.
Since PlayOnline installed properly, it seems very unlikely that the Windows Installer itself is corrupted, since it's required for the PlayOnline install process. However, it's entirely possible that you either didn't close the PlayOnline install or that it left a process running in the background. Go to the Task Manager and pull up the process list and see if something called "InstMSI.exe" is running. If it is, then the Windows Installer is probably running in the background - the safest thing to do would be to reboot and see if it works, the unsafe thing to do would be to straight out kill the process by saying "End Process" on it. It should be obvious which one I advocate.
Unfortunately, this is basically a wild guess. I need more information to make a truly informed answer. For now, my answer is really just "reboot and try again." However, I can say that the error message you've given really does not sound like a bad disc - but I suppose it could be possible, if it caused it to misread the code to start the Windows Installer.

well, I figured out my problem. Turn out you NEED and GeForce or Radeon card to play FFXI which definatly blows seeing as how I already spent $100 to play the game now I need to fork over another $100, GRRRRR.
/me wonders how much Square got payed by Nvidia and ATI to make their game run only on thier cards...
anyways, my mom said she'll take me down to best buy tommorow morning. God I hope it's not hard to install a new video card, hell hope it's just as easy as the RAM was
one question though... Is this game worth $200 ???

Should be easy - you remove the old card, insert the new one. Ensure the new card you get works with your motherboard, though - check your motherboard's AGP support and the AGP support on the card you're getting. As long as they can support each other, it should basically be plug-and-play. The one word of warning is that you should probably "uninstall" the current graphics device from the hardware manager before installing the new card. In any case, Windows 2000/XP should detect the card as a VGA card and allow you to install the proper drivers. (If you use Windows 98/ME, I think you must uninstall the previous card drivers.)

Of course... must... level... up... kill... quadavs... stupid quadavs...one question though... Is this game worth $200 ???

Well, I fixed my previous problem. I tried loading the game from my external CD/DVD writer and it worked! Its installed an everything! Only took me an entire night to update the damn thing though...
However, I have encountered a new problem...
When starting FFXI through PlayOnline, the whole screen goes black and the following Playonline eror comes up.
Terminated as error occured in Final Fantasy XI
Failed to recognize Hardware TnL.
Please check that this computer has the required
specifications to run FFXI. (-1)
Sigh, now I should be able to run it on my computer but I think this may have something to do with the fact that I can't access the FFXI Config program (it comes up but the section where you select the options remains a blank grey slate.) Seeing how long it took me to install and update I'd really rather not do it all over again. Oh well, I just may have to wait for my new computer to show up early next month...

Sorry... but that's the same problem PhyreBurn had in this thread. The only solution is a new video card, one that supports DirectX 8.1 (basically). You've got to check those minimum requirements! The FFXI config program basically allows you to configure your game pad and the resolution it runs at - nothing that will help you if your video card doesn't meet the minimum requirements.

Unfortunately, you probably will have to. Unless you can (and are willing to) purchase a new video card for your current computer, you're out of luck. Your system simply can't run FFXI. Sorry.Oh well, I just may have to wait for my new computer to show up early next month...
No I should be sorry, I should have read all the posts (I could swear I did...). I know people hate the same question multiple times.

Yeah, FF XI will only play on Nvidia and ATI cards, which is pretty gay cause if you have a GREAT card that happens to be another brand, you're screwed
But I'm "secretly" happy mine didn't work cause we got us a new Radeon 9200
and DAMN does this game look nice on high resolution
