Tip on Magicked skull subjob item

Post by Chalnoth » Mon Dec 15, 2003 7:44 pm

If you are around lvl 17-18 get a group (17-19 group to be safe) with a thief preferably (item hunter abillity) and go to the gusgen mines. there are areas where 3 ghouls spawn. (try going left at the first room) be sure you trust these people though, cause some of the ghouls there will be rather difficult to take down. you will get good xp from them and have the chance for the it seems uber-rare magicked skull item drop. just be careful. on the fenrir server the gusgen mine ghouls aren't that heavily camped. hope this helps those playing ff11 get their subjob.
btw, hi i'm new to these boards

I merged this with the FFXI question answer thread just to keep the amount of FFXI threads down.

As for the gusgen mines, it seems the skull drops even less there than the Dunes from my experiences.
I found it better to hunt in the dunes (Since usualy if you are looking for teh skull...theres atleast somebody else in the party that needs something else) and fight the damselflies during the day and then at night move to J-6 (I think, its the northern corner foresty area near the la-theiene zone) where Ghouls seem to spawn more. Defeat the little bat thingies (the 3 bats not the single big one) which seems to help ghouls spawn faster.

Just be quick in grabbing the ghoul, for if its like Gilgamesh, everybody will be camping that area and will gladly wait for you do all the work for a ghoul.

yeah j-6 has the highest ghoul spawn in dunes, and yeah the bats are the place holders (kill to get a spot for more ghouls)

i went to gesgun and found they dropped skulls as fast as in the dunes, maybe i was just lucky.

OK, WTF is up with FFXI's update

Post by dmpotter » Tue Dec 16, 2003 2:31 am

Seriously, who designed this thing? A drunk monkey? I think a drunk monkey could have done a better job. Hey, here's an idea - retry downloading the file if you can't get it the first time! Don't force me to restart the entire f***ing update because you couldn't immediately get a response to download the file.

And speaking of that, why can't I access the update files? I am a paying customer of this service and that includes updates! Hey, Square Enix, ever heard of Akamai? If you expect people to pay $13 a month for this service, you just might wanna look into it. Either that or invest in some more file servers so that people paying for the service can actually, like, use it.

At the very least, if you insist on using this crappy update process, here's a thought - automatically restart the thing instead of forcing me to babysit the piece of crap each and every time it times out and forces a restart. I don't want to click on restart each and every time, I want to start the update and wander off and come back - regardless of how many times you couldn't start a download and had to restart - and see it done.

Of course, if someone actually designed this thing who wasn't a drunk monkey, it'd actually wait 10 seconds and *gasp* try again on the file it couldn't access. Fail that 20 times in a row, then bitch and force a restart. Otherwise, keep trying, and don't force me to wait for the thing to check 1,141 files each and every time it can't access one file!

I mean, damn. This is the worst update process I have ever seen.

odd my update went perfectly fine and it checkes to see which of the updated files you have already done so as to see if it can skip them.... all in all i felt it was a rather good download program much better then half-life and Counterstrike did for ages (don't know if they changed it or not)

o btw is there a place were one can tell which server they are in so as to maybe link up? Im on the Carbuncle server.

you can put people on your friends list. When they are online, it will mention which server they are on.

as for the update...I didnt have much problem with it either.

That's all I get. It pulls the update list, "checks files," then that. It's quite obviously wrong since I can access, oh everything else just fine. (Including, say, PlayOnline - otherwise, I would have been logged out of the client too...) So - blame my network connection, huh. Everything else is working fine. AIM up without a hitch. Web browser still works. After it "checks file" I instantly get that screen. If I restart the PlayOnline browser, I can download five files before getting that screen.

Square's solution? All of them are for the PS2. Oh, and "decrease the MTU." Thanks.

hmmm the only thing I can suggest is to wait till tomorrow, the only thing I can think of is that the patch server might be overloaded.
Also, this is a guess, but also check your firewall...maybe its being weird tonight and refusing to let the program find the patch server (I dunno, I dont think its that)
If you keep getting the problem, try contacting support.

The firewall only blocks incoming connection attempts (SYN requests, unrequested UDP packets) and is external to my computer. I've never had problems downloading anything else, including files in the gigabyte range. Given that the only problem I'm having is with the update process, it basically must be something wrong with Square's update process. If it weren't downloading 1-5 files at a time, I'd believe there was something wrong with my network connection.

But it only downloads 0-5 files at a time and then instantly bitches about the connection being bad. Even if the patch server were overloaded, if it were implemented in the manner suggested above (wait 10 seconds, retry the file) instead of restarting the entire process, this wouldn't be an issue. Hell, if it automatically restarted the process without requiring me to press "retry," that would be almost acceptable. But I've been baby-sitting the update process since 5:00PM and it's only got some 400 files and it's now 11:30PM. That's just BS for a commercial service.

And Square's customer support is no help. The MTU has already been reduced to no effect, and the driver is already the latest driver. This is just a broken update process. At least in the case of the Half-Life/Counter-Strike update system, once you started the download it wouldn't randomly restart the download like it does in this case.

I was rather hoping other people would be having issues with the update, but if not, then there's something seriously wrong with my client.

As far as I can tell, there is no rhyme or reason to when I get the error message displayed above. It will be downloading just fine and then after a file downloads it will instantly display the above error message. No warning, no reason. The error messages listed there make no obvious sense - the network is fine, I've been connecting to PlayOnline just fine, it can obviously download just fine. It just randomly quits and forces me to restart.

It's been six hours and I only just reached half the files downloaded. This is obviously BS. I'm going to have to bug customer service on the phone tomorrow.

Edit: I just noticed that the "send/receive" icons indicate that PlayOnline is actually sending data when it tells me that it lost it's network connection. This is just infuriating.

Edit 2: The update finally completed, in little batches of 10-20 files at a time. *grumbles* But I ran into Sagus and Calaeriel after finally getting the update to complete, so I guess waiting 6 hours was worth it. :) (I'm beginning to wonder if I should be blaming Comcast, since they seem to like to randomly zap packets...)

Hey, would a computer like this run the game I haven't looked at it yet...

- 776 MHz

- GeForce 4 MMX SDR (64mb)

- 512 SDRAM

*peers hopefully at everyone*

If not are their less detailed models, I could run the game with?
And what is the combat system? (Is it like Everquest?)
