Re: FFXI Questions and Answer Thread.
Okay, after a full weekend of the game I just wanted to post some thoughts and things I've noticed are regular questions:
Gil --
there are two ways. First, go on quests for people. You get about 500 gil for handing out flyers for the magic shop or for retrieving 3 lufet salts from the river crabs, and finding the documents for the guy in the pub. There are other quests too - selling batwings for 200, rabbit hides for 120, and flint stones for 100. The secret to the quests is GO TALK TO NPCS!! Quests are good money, and sometimes good weapons/armor (spatha, light axe, shield, leather gloves, enchanted necklace.)
The other way is learn to use the auction house. Some things you can sell for good gil -- Goblin Helm is 600 gil, Wolf hide is 800, zinc orc and sheepskins are 300, sheep tooth is 200, etc, etc, etc. And ALWAYS sell your crystals in a pack of twelve at the auction house. Big gil there.
Weapons/Armor --
When you're asked to get a revival root, just buy it at the auction house for 200 and then you'll get a spatha. Find the pickpocket and you'll get a lightaxe. But the BEST secret is this: get a signet and kill things outside of our own territory (like when beastmen control W. Ronfare, etc.) This gets you capture points. With capture points you can get free equipment from Temple Knights - most of these are not only good defense but also add to your magic defense and/or base stats. Free uber gear friends!
What Level Should I Be? --
Ft. Ghelsba - I'd suggest level 6-9 for the first couple areas, but I'd also suggest a group of at least three for most of the area. All the orcs level up here (Neckchoppers, Stonechuckers) so be careful!
La Plateau - Again, stronger monsters here so I'd suggest at least level 9 or ten and a party of three. Most everything here can do major damage to the whole group with one shot so be wary.
King's Tomb - Level seven is probably good here, but at night you'd better keep your eyes open cause enchanted bones can kill a level elven. You need scales off the dingbats at night though... so watch out.
Using Provoke --
Okay, here's the thing, and I credit Helm for this: "provoke can be used every 30 seconds so you need to use it every 30 seconds" If you're in a party and have provoke you need to go crazy with it. Be a tank, and keep them focused on you. Monsters have hatelevels, and they'll focus their attacks on things they hate. They hate being hurt, they hate being provoked, but they REALLY hate magic. If you have a magician in your party they'll almost always attack after the first spell. The best way to protect your magicians is to combo your own attacks and provoking often. I've been in a party of 5 with two mages and taken all the damage before - but you have to provoke every 30 seconds!! Learn to regulate hate so you can protect your mages, and they'll thank you by keeping you alive and obliterating monsters with big flashy spells. It's symbios baby, learn to love it.
The Big Picture --
This isn't just a hacknslash game so don't treat it like one. It's a Final Fantasy - so do what you do in final fantasy games (get clues, do sidequests, put together puzzle pieces, think outside the box, etc)

Re: FFXI Questions and Answer Thread.
About the japanese players - I disagree. Or, at least on Phoenix it doesn't seem that way. From what I've seen most of the japanese players are godsends! I can't tell you how many times I've been fighting a sheep or crab or something when an orc or goblin (aggros) have jumped in and started beating me down and the ONLY thing that saved me was a japanese player in the upper-levels casting heal and protect on me while cheering me on.
Sure, there's still a big communication problem and we rarely can understand each other but that doesn't mean much. A lot of japanese characters will run around casting heals and protects on lower level characters, cheer or applaud after we win, or say a short english phrase like "Fight! Fight!" or "Enjoy fight!" Something encouraging. A few have even been offering linkpearls, and I know a couple of them that actually do their best to help their linkpearl low-levels to solve quests and stuff. I've seen them lead people in the Tomb, and through the plains - all while healing them in battles.
Other servers might have problems, but I don't see it in Phoenix in the San d'Oria area. I think just the opposite. Knowing their culture, and seeing their reactions I think they're really excited they get to play with us on the same server for once. I've enjoyed their moral and health boosts myself, and I already consider some of them friends!

Yeah I have talked to one japanese person who know a good bit of english.
On a side note, there is the auto-complete built into the game. It doesnt seem to be in the japanese version, but what you can do is start typing something in like "h" and hit tab and it will summon a pull down menu in which what it thinks it says. For instance "Hello!"
Reason I say this, the auto-completed words will be translated into japanese for japanese players!
Just dont give them the wrong idea that you can speak fluent japanese XD

Yeah, I have to thank the Japanese players, They've saved my ass on several occasions.
And now a question. Does any one know were I can get some Scail Mail or possibly some Soid Mail? I've tried the AH but the bid wars have skyrocketed the price.

Wow...that's cool, yet amazingly unnecessary. Could have just spent ten bucks at Fry's and bought a PSX -> USB adapter.Everyone should have a nice PSX pad to control their FFXI. There is nothing like playing with a nice PSX pad... I keep saying PSX pad because of this.

Yes, I have a completely functional PSX port block on the front of my computer. Took me a couple days to put it together.
I think the seals can be made into ignots. Not sure yet though. I know that 4 beastman coins and a fire crystal will make a brass ignot.
In the Bastok area you can cook sheep meat to get Galka Aausages and then give them to Hungry Wolf in the Metalworks mess hall. You get 300gil for each piece of meat. I have just been giving him one at a time. Takes 1 game day to cook the meat though.

If guns are outlawed
Can we use swords?

Ahhh...so the recipe faq on gamefaqs.com is wrong. It said 4 beastmen coins and a fire to make an ingot. Well cool, now i can get my skill up a bit more. oh wait, san d'oria doesn't own the surrounding territory so we can't get crystals...
Get signet and kill them critters people!
I have killed so many orcs, i could build a city out of orc parts, start my own faction, have it get taken by orcs, then have to kill more orcs again. For the love of god, how many orcs do we have to kill to end this madness?? My kung fu grows weary of killing orcs!
For the record, you can still get crystals if you go to La Thien Plateau with Signet on and kill there. I get craploads of em from there.
