I hate country music, but I have to listen to it 6 hours a day, 5 days a week

Because I work at wendy's, and I live in eastern kentucky, I get to clean the dining room to the sounds of some whiny hick complaining that he lost his woman, his truck, and his dog.
Emo bands all sound the same. The lead singer has semi-mullet hair and wears tight jeans. He has a guitar but rarely uses it except for during his solo when all he does us jump up and down like a 2x4 robot-man and scream the same word over and over again.
Yeah, you're officially full of shit.

Has anyone else besides me in here actually listened to Emo that came out /before/ the Blink182 craze?

One last time: Go get some fucking Alkaline Trio. I'd suggest Radio, myself, or anything off their new album. New Found Glory's old stuff isn't horrible, either, and The Ataris do good Emo.

How about no Salvation. I have heard all the emo I intend to hear for one lifetime. Your pride and joy bands can suck it, for the musical equivalent of that drunk dude who cries and tells all these sad stories about his life is not something I wish to partake in.

God forbid I start to like things I hear on the radio, Terrene
I don't give a damn WHERE you heard it.

God, I hate country. It's the only genre that I totally DESPISE.

IT'S NOT ALL SAD! THE GOOD STUFF ISN'T EVEN /MOSTLY/ SAD!

Let me see if I can give you a good example, showing you how your logic right now's working.

St. Anger sucked.
Therefore, all Metallica sucks.
Therefore, all 90's metal sucks.
Therefore, all metal sucks.

And you know what? For the most part I agree with you guys. I can't fucking stand Good Charolette and All American Rejects. They're no-talent hacks that cashed in on the rising popularity of Blink and Green Day. But to say "Hey, this /entire/ /style/ of music sucks because I don't like the /four/ /most/ /prominent/ bands in it," that's incredibly pathetic and close-minded.

Try some Bad Religion. They've said that their not punk, but let's face it. Manyu of their songs' guitar sounds punky. What's special about them, however, is their vocals. Good melody, good harmony. I like too many of their songs, but I'll list a few good ones off the top of my head.

Epiphany
American Jesus
New America
No Control
Broken

That's just a few I like, but I have many, many more if you're interested.

Salvation, I think Alkaline Trio is more of a core band than emo. Anyway I love punk, but I've got to ask, what bands do you consider punk? If it's bands like
The Unseen
Rise Againse
Againste me!
Anti-flag
Dead Kennedys
Lower Class brats
Misfits
The Sex Pistols
The Clash
The Ramones
A global threat
Cheap Sex
The Casualties.

Then ya, it's punk but if it's like Sum 41 and shit then you're not hearing punk.

But I like metal, regular rock and alternative along with punk so it's not like it's a one type thing.

hmmm, im more inclined to listen to the "speed" metal genre of rhapsody or kamelot, although sometimes im more inclined towards "death" metal such as dimmu borgir, cradle of filth, etc.... and other times (when im driving) i listen to techno, which i shouldnt do while driving as it makes me do ~5 mph over what i usually do, which is usually 5 mph over the limit... as for punk, im not really a big fan of the "true hardcore" punk bands, just because it sounds like 2 chords being mashed together with some random guy screaming at the top of his lungs... also what i listen to depends on my mood.... if im pissed off ill listen to death metal, happy or something ill listen to speed metal, if im sad ill listen to slower rush or classic rock.... meh, it all depends on what your ear hears and what your ear likes... its not all about what genre its in...
I really need a new sig....

I like all those bands, and I like some of the newer late-eighties/early-nineties bands, too. Early Green Day is a solid punk band, a direct evolution from the Ramones, and Rancid and Operation Ivy are godly in their own right. (And you left out NOFX! How could you!)

I see your point with Alkaline Trio; lyrically, they're solidly emo, while musically they're core. It's hard to call. Some people's definition of Emo is horribly broad; I had a friend tell me Finch was Emo the other day. I just kind of sat and looked at her.

I like other stuff, as well, although I could easily see how one might not think so. :) I listen to Tool and Disturbed incessently, along with Juno Reactor and Crystal Method, Led Zepplin, the Beatles, the Eagles, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Dave Brubeck... I listen to damn near everything except Spears-pop, Blink-poppunk, most rap, and most country. Anything else is fair game.

I try to stay out of this whole argument, mostly because I generally don't like angry music. I like weird, sarcastic and/or funny music. And classic rock.
Bands I like:
They Might Be Giants
Barenaked Ladies
Weezer
Billy Joel
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
Queen
The Who
Blue Oyster Cult
MxPx
Green Day
The Ramones
Less Than Jake
NoFX
In the end though, it's really the bees that get Sam.

...could someone tell me what the devil 'Emo' actually MEANS? I was hoping this thread would answer it, but it obviously hasn't. I have no idea what it is. One day its apparently applied to music, the next clothes, the next attitudes...what IS it?

"Emo" is short for "emotional," and it's this whiney, sappy music that everyone is talking about :P

What the devil is 'emotional hardcore'? And what emotions specifically?
