Ummmm... since I don't care about genres I have failed to check this out but... is Coldplay emo? I was just wondering because if they are then they aren't fitting the usual stereotypes you are giving it. Also, if you actually listen to them they are not all that sad, they just use a sad melody which I like because it is calming. I swear! Do we need genres to select our music for us? Genres were made by lazy corporations who wanted a cheap fix. It seems funny that the more anti=establishment a music seems to become, the more they define themselves and their fans by genres which were created by the corporations they hate.

Ripped straight from Audiogalaxy (God rest its soul.)
"Emo" is short for "Emotional Hardcore." The term began as a derogatory one but has been proudly and vehemently claimed by lovers of this dynamic, intensely emotional splinter genre of Hardcore. Much of Emo is characterized introspective lyrics, sudden, surprising shifts in rhythm, ragged, screamingly emotional vocals, pretty instrumental breakdowns, slightly unconventional song structures, and a decidedly un-punk embrace of poppy elements. The genre's heyday began with bands like Sunny Day Real Estate, The Get-Up Kids, and The Promise Ring. It has since become a more widely popular style, adopted by both radio-ready pop bands like Good Charlotte and Saves the Day and introspective indie singer/songwriters like Bright Eyes and Pedro the Lion.

No. Coldplay is lacking the distorted guitars, fast tempo, heavy backbeats and complete lack of singing voice that typifies Emo. Coldplay just happens to be pretty and have introspective lyrics.

Emo bands all sound the same. The lead singer has semi-mullet hair and wears tight jeans. He has a guitar but rarely uses it except for during his solo when all he does us jump up and down like a 2x4 robot-man and scream the same word over and over again.
Funny...I'm a lead singer in an emo band, and a. I don't have anything closely resembling a mullet, b. I'm not a big fan of tight jeans, c. I play bass not guitar and I don't jump up and down and d. I've never screamed the same words over and over again in any of our songs.

EDIT: Oh, and e. I'm a female, not a male.

Gee, I must be full of shit, eh? Go excrement! Tis the way to live! I'm entitled to my own opinion and my last post was purely based on my experiences. Maybe your "old emo" was good and maybe it wasn't; I don't know. I'm talking about "new emo" as I see it today.

And yes, I am pulling the "it's my opinion, you narrowminded freak" crap. So fuck me.

There are alot of good Emo bands out there, actually. Ever heard of Bowling for Soup? Great band.

Ugh, the world needs to stop thinking of more categories for music. Stupid people like me can't keep up with them. The first time my sister told me that she listened to emo I had to go look it up really quick so I could pretend like I knew what she was talking about.

I dunno though, I think emo is ok. I think punk and pop punk and country and pretty much everything else is ok too. I think every type of music has *something* to offer, if you listen with an open ear. :D

Yeah well, it's tolerable but not when you have to listen to it in the early hours of the morning, or in the late hours of the evening, or constantly throughout the day... then you start to think of stabbing people whenever you hear an emo song.

Oh I understand that, Shyknight. I get a little crazy myself when I am stuck in a car listening to Destiny's Child, which happens more often than I would like. :D

No matter how patient I like to consider myself when it comes to music, Destiny's Child and all of their solo efforts make me want to throw myself out of the car.

Hmm. So much for my "but I love all music" blathering. :P

Salvation, I left out NOFX because I don't like them. And rancid, godly punk band *thinks of a bass solo he spent 2 years of his life learning*, but recently decided to jump in with AFI and sell out for the money.

Ah. So 'Emo' is simply a tag-word for the latest re-invention of a particular musical style, and has moved on to being its own sterotype for methods of thinking, dressing, acting, and the like.

I see...

...you're all insane.
