Wha?

No Shroom, Emo is a distinct style of music, nothing more. It's quite easy to define, and I really dislike it.

If people go around saying Emo was a 'lifestyle' or something I'd just laugh at them.

Screw it, I'm wasting time trying to explain myself, you'd call us insane no matter what we all said. There's just no pleasing you.

Sorry, I meant to come back to this yesterday, but I never said I was lead singer in a *good* emo band....^_^ we actually are pretty horrid right now. I just wanted to dispell that stereotype. I hate stereotypes. They're so....stereotypical. I agree with whoever said there's some merit in all types of music (it's three a.m. and I'm too tired to go back and look). It's not fair to judge all bands just because they're in a certain genre. They're all different.

But it tends to be hard for anyone to look at all music so they make it easier on themselves by using genres as a tool. problem is genres become more than a tool and turn into a defining substance of that music. It is a pretty bad development coming from people that are too lazy to actually look at music. Also, this is a condescending remark to all of those wannabe hardcore elitists and not any of you guys. I mean, I don't even necessarily love music as an art or anything. I respect it, being my strong feelings against genres, but I sincerely don't care that much about music. I just think that (if music is not a big drive in your life) if you just sit back and let the music you listen to just happen to be the music you like without hearing your best friend or that damned TV network that barely even shows any music on it in the first place tell you what that music is. Music is music goddamnit! Listen to whatever you damn well please.

Now I don't want anyone actually listening to me on this because I'm not even sure it made any sense. It is just a rant... that's it

Emo is NOT punk.
Emo is NOT hardcore.
Emo is NOT music.
Emo is NOT good.

I'm with Catine. I don't even know what half the categories mean, let alone what sort of music falls into them.

Here is how I see it:
Genres are a way to sort out the millions of choices you have, not to immediately dismiss a certain genre just becuase you didn't like one bands portrayal(sp?) of it.

Listen around, broaden your horizons. If you hate a genre, take some time to listen to a wide variety of artists in it..maybe you'll find something you like. And if not, at least your not a close minded bastard.

...Riiiiiiiiiight.

Riddle me this: Can't ANY form of music be considered 'Emotional Hardcore' or whatnot? Isn't classical music emotional? Is that Emo? Aren't the rather agnsty lyrics of Korn or perhaps Linkin Park emotional? Is that Emo? What about the funk of George Clinton? Is that Emo?

If its so damned easy to define, define it already.

Emo is generally considered music with a bright, open punk sound and stereotypical "being a upper-middle-class-white-teenage-suburbanite is hard" lyrics. Most of the genre fits that description, but not all.
Here I am, to sing you a song. And there you are, asleep against the windowpane, just like always.
Or how about those guys who think they're hardcore, and to them rock is playing as loud as possible while screaming unintelligable lyrics into a microphone. Here's what it sounds like: MAH LAH RAAAAAAA EN I FAAAAAA GRAAAAHHH! NAAAAAAAGH! FOUND A BOX OF CHOCOLATE CRAP WHAT A BEAUTIFUL DAAAAAAAAAAAAGH! AH FAAABAADAAAA! RAAAA RAAAAAA!

THAT. IS. NOT. MUSIC. Stop please!
Yes it is music. Just because you have a prejudice against a certain kind of music, does not mean it isn't music.
Understand that musically, I'm not really that active.
And a generalization of an entire genre(s) without taking in more than the bands you have heard is a little hasty.

I agree. Emo is just shortened for 'Emotional'. If an artist puts Emotion into his/her music, then I guess it should be called 'Emo'.
Whatever your views may be on the entire subject, I really don't care. All I know is that in the future I will continue listening to my music, be it emo, or hardcore (sXe). And at all the shows I go to I will be in the front row, flailing my arms around in a spastic seisure, just for you Shyknight.
Just for you.

I have bottomed out and my future doesn't fit into my schedule.
All booked up on depression and self-loathing.
Buried deep in sleep from passing out, no time to plan ahead.
Someone please tell me, why do i think this way?
Someone please tell me that this isn't the end of everything.

A chemical imbalance? No. The smell of my own vomit lost in my last tears.
No more kissing clocks or throwing coins into wishing wells to try and fix the way I fucked myself.

When it's finally here, it's never enough and when it's finally gone, it's never coming back.
Somehow I fooled myself into believing that this would work out, that I wouldn't end up hurt.

Actually, yeah. I think you can. Of course I'm sure some fans may get a little upset if you group Korn or something with their favorite bands.

see....this is what I hate, people hear a style of music and don't like it, so they say ALL EMO SUCKS. That's fine, you don't like Emo, so don't listen to it, enough said. There is absolutely no need to tell people every chance you get that you don't like a style of music, because frankly if you are talking to a person who DOES like that style you aren't going to change their mind....EVER. Listen to what you like, and let everyone else listen to what they like and deal with it, these arguments never go anywhere....how many fucking posts are in these forums about this SAME subject.....it's pointless
