Object Dock ?

Post by PhyreBurn » Fri Nov 14, 2003 12:24 am

I was looking through the desktop thread and I saw people using something called objectdock, I think it's the thing that makes it look like a mac, but I'm not sure. Anyways I was wondering if it's complicated to use, or if it's more trouble than it's worth.

So... what are some opinions on objectdock ?

I just got my PC using friend to try out ObjectDock... he had it installed and running in about 10 minutes... so I don't think it's too hard.

Try it, you might like it. :)

You can get object dock over here its free so no worries on paying for it. :P
if you really want it to look like a mac you can go to ThemeXP that is if you are useing windows XP and make it look like a Mac or Linux OS. You will need to get StyleXP to change the visual style of XP and that can be found over here. Have fun. :)

you can either use it as a total replacement for the taskbar or use it(like me) to just dump your shortcuts in there so they won't bother :)

I got it and tried it, but it's mostly just in the way. It looks nice and all, but it always gets hidden underneath the window, even when I tell it to be always on top. So I went back to my start bar

I found that on my pitiful little 400 mhz processor, it used up more CPU and RAM than I would have liked, so I got rid of it after a couple days.

It's quite useful, but it's a bit of a processor drain. :(

@phyreburn
here's the solution:
activate "always on top" and activate "autohide" so when you go away with the mouse, it's hidden, and when you move the mouse to it, it reapperes ;)

I'll try that when I get home (I'm in school right now) hopefully it'll work, it's definatly a lot nicer looking than the start bar (even with Style XP) but I think the start bar is just more practical, and it's easier to see what programs are running and stuff. Also, the shortcuts I add to the dock allways lose a good amount of quality, which makes the dock look kinda bad.

I hate the Dock more than I hate the Mac itself. I hate PC versions of it, even more. It's flaming.

I have a Start menu for the same purpose as that thing. And the taskbar and Quick launch thingy.

You guys have no sense of style. The "Start" menu is a lamo hang-over from Win3.1 when Microsoft realized that people had gotten used to the old Program Groups. The task bar is just a bunch of buttons and you can't even rearrange them. The Quick launch "thingy" is just plain annoying; the icons are either so small that you can only barely tell what they are, or they're so big that you have to double the size of the task bar.

Actually the start menu didn't come along till win95.
Also the icons on quick launch aren't too small even at 1600x1200.

PhyreBurn, the reason that most of the icons lose quality when you use them in the dock is because they are made at a small resolution, and then when you hover over them they are stretched much larger than where they were originally intended to go. At http://www.wincustomize.com , you can download various sets of icons that are specifically designed to look great both small and zoomed-in. A lot of them look really stylish, even. O_O

I know the Start menu didn't come along until Win95, the reason it was even there in the first place was so that Microsoft could get rid of the old Program Manager. Early revs of 95 (a.k.a. "Chicago") tried to get you to use Windows Explorer to launch programs, kind of like the >cough< Mac. The 8.5 filenames, older programs, and users expecting Program Groups forced MS to expand the Start menu to include the program groups from 3.1

Oh, and I run my Winbox at 1600x1200, the icons are tiny.
