I don't think the movies suck at all.
The thing that makes most Book-Movies suck is that they leave everything out from the book. Either that or they assume you've read the book in order to understand the movie. LOTR Keeps everything good about the books mostly intact (partly thanks to really long movies and a GINORMOUS budget), while adding things that a book can never convey; beautiful New Zealand landscapes, an epic soundtrack, and really great visual effects (Gollum, anyone?). All of these things combine and make the movies bring the Lord of the Rings story to life in a way that the books, as great as they are, just can't.
That's not to say I think the movies are better than the books; I think they're about the same.

Mmm, books.
I knew some people that didn't like the movies, but they didn't like fantasy stuff in general. Most people I know that are fans of the books (and dreaded the release of the movies) say that the movies are at least decent, being shiny eye candy to accompy the original books if nothing else.

I was given the collectors edition of TTT for my birthday today
My very own Smeagol!
Mista, theres lots in the books that can be taken the wrong way with a bit of winkage and nudging like the Pipe Weed that gandalf and the hobbits love so much, Tolkien said he only meant it as tobacco, but it hasn't stopped all the stoners giggling at those bits.

"Face it, you're two nipples away from being human."
Did you imagine the final sound as a gun? Or the shattered windows of a car? Did you ever imagine the last thing you'd hear as you're fading out was a song?
