South Farthing's finest, $100 a joint. ^.^

And Grav just remembered, they were laying new sidewalk at her college over the summer, so they now have 'Frodo Lives' and 'JRRT is in Haven Now' graffitti at school. ^.^

another reason why lord of the rings found such a following in the 60's

I believe I heard something about how the Beatles really loved the LotR books when they first came out, and they were toying with the idea of making a movie starring the four band members as Frodo, Sam, Gollum, and Gandalf...

I enjoy the movies, but I haven't been able to stomach the books. To me, they read like history books. If I want something like that, I'll rather read about actual history than detail ad nauseum about stuff that never existed. Not to say they suck. What I have been able to slog through has some good ideas in it, but it's just more detail than I want to dedicate myself to for something that's not real.

Aman, the Beattle's WERE looking into making a version of LotR.

But then they got a letter in the mail from one JRR Tolkien requesting they didn't. They promptly decided that the project was best left alone. ^.^

And Ggrav is actually surprised by the number of people who found the books dry. When she picked them up, she couldn't put them down. True, she WAS 13 the first time she read them on her own, but still. ^.^;

It might be an English vs American thing. ^.^;

I wouldn't say they were dry. I just found them excessively detailed. I know that's one of the things that makes them so great to most people. But for my leisure time, if I want that much detail, I'll read some history or grapple with some sutras. Sometimes when I state that, people will retort that I should just read Harry Potter if I don't want to use that much brainpower. It's not a question of brainpower used during leisure reading, but rather one of how much I'm dedicating to something that isn't real. That's my only real qualm with trying to read them.

Well, I certainly find it more interesting than learning about, say, the war of 1812. :roll:

It's not so much detail...

Not as much as your average history book anyway. :?

And certainly more action-oriented. If you want something really boring, read the Silmarillion. It's worse than the Bible. :x

a tale of two cities, now that was drawn out
"Water is fluid, soft, and yielding. But water will wear away rock which is rigid and cannot yield. As a rule, whatever is fluid, soft, and yielding will overcome whatever is rigid and hard. This is another paradox: whatever is soft is strong."

The problem is, most people don't get as far as the village of Bree,and get put off by the likes of Tom Bombadill, and those fucking songs and poems
"Face it, you're two nipples away from being human."
Did you imagine the final sound as a gun? Or the shattered windows of a car? Did you ever imagine the last thing you'd hear as you're fading out was a song?

I admit there are a few to many of those; especially in the Hobbit.

Kind of like the Redwall series. Every time they freaking turn around, they're eating.. and Jacques goes into all of this detail about what they're eating. It's not a story.. it's a damn cookbook.

There's what I'd rather read than LotR.. cookbooks. I am Ming Tsai's bitch.

Yeah, Redwall is alright, except that every book is pretty much the same. And what you mentioned about the endless feast descriptions.

Consesus around these parts is that Tolkien was an excellent world-builder, but a lousy story-teller; the only reason he had the stories is so as not to let his world go to waste.
