I don't care who's right, who's wrong, or what you meant to say. Only thing I care about is the Truth. If you have it, good, share it. If not, find it. If you want to argue, do it with someone else.

Here I am, to sing you a song. And there you are, asleep against the windowpane, just like always.

In my experience, most times, when someone says they'll pray for you, it's with a pretty evident tone of condescending. It comes off not so much like "I'll pray that you someday understand God's love," but rather "I'll pray that someday you understand that I'm right, you're wrong, and that my way is the only way."
If a person feels compelled to pray for someone, why even tell them? Why not just do it? They know that, more than likely, telling the other person they're going to do it will simply tick them off, and further alienate them from the religion in question. Why must compassion be put on display?[/quote]
I think that there's a time and a plcae for saying certain things, and "I'll pray for you" is one of them. And it's not always so much "I'll pray that you'll understand God's love," it's often a lot like "I pray that you can get through whatever sort of thing you're going through," or "I pray that you get to go to the school you want to" and not necessarily prayer for conversion.
I pray for others out of genuine concern. If they don't see things the same way I do, that's fine. I just want the people I care about to live happy, healthy lives. I certainly don't think that's condescending, and I don't really make it a public display, either. Of course, I agree there are a lot of people out there who can't get off their high horses, but probably most of those people really care, too, they just don't express it very well, and come off as complete assholes.

I don't see why people are so sensitive and find prayer offensive.
I myself have certain concerns and confusions about religion, and I wouldnt like it if someone tried to FORCE me to see it their way. But if someone said they would pray that I do see it their way, it would mean... and does mean a lot to me...
Because even if someone is arrogant, narrow minded and think their views are supperior, if the PRAY for you, the one thing that matters most is that they are doing so because they GENUINLY care about you... care about you enough to open their heart and pray by what THEY beleive in most... Even if you don't beleive in God, you dont need to see God to see that prayer is a thing of great meaning for those who practice it, and nothing is more sincere then the care they may show for you through that prayer.
To me... Well if they are praying for things you don't beleive... I think this deep sincerity and genuine concern far outweighs the context.

Getting back to the whole, "I'll pray for you" thing...
I think the reason people have opposite opinions on this issue is that they are imagining different contexts for the previous statement. For example, it is one thing to say, "I'll pray for you," to someone who is going through a rough time. That's not condesceding. However, people also say, "I'll pray for you, " to people who religion or otherwise theology differs from their own, and this is terribly condescending. Essentially this is saying, "I love you, so I don't want you to go to hell. But I do think you deserve to, you heathen bastard."

In the end though, it's really the bees that get Sam.

Lose the racist speech. Permanently. I don't care if you think you're making a point, or being sarcastic, or even funny. It ends now.
