In the cast commentaries for TTT special extended, John Rhys-Davies explains his theory on why Gimli is inherently funny: "He doesn't realize he's small". :D

We're not short! You're just freakishly tall!

Or, in the immortal words of Terry Pratchett -

"Don't think of it as being short. Think of it as 'within weapons range of your groin."

Anyway - just got TTT extended edition for Christmas, will have to check out the commentary. J. R-D is teh man.

Indubitably. I think of all the excellent actors in the trilogy, he's second only to Ian McKellan. And maybe Christopher Lee.

Lee was too hammy. Given the script, I think the best acting was from Viggo Mortenson. In general, the acting was very good. IMHO, the standouts (besides Viggo) were Bernard Hill (Theoden) in TTT, Billy Boyd (Pippin), and Andy Serkis (Gollum.)

And I agree with Last Knight that making Gimli the comic relief made him look stupid. Although the end orc tally in the extended edition of TTT made up for a lot. :)

Yeah, I guess Bernard Hill was good, and Serkis was great. I didn't really like Viggo Mortensen, though. Most of the time he was alright, but a few of his lines (especially in the first movie) were pretty horrible.

While I was impressed by most of the cast, Sean Astin in ROTK especially, but personally I thought Bernard Hill stole both the last two movies from under the feet of the entire cast.

Did you imagine the final sound as a gun? Or the shattered windows of a car? Did you ever imagine the last thing you'd hear as you're fading out was a song?
