...If I should die before I wake...

Post by MissCheetah » Tue Dec 23, 2003 1:51 am

Sorry to sound so morbid, but I was wondering if something happened to you would your online friends have a way to know?

In my case not likely. Only one IRL person who lives near me and sees me often has any clue about my internet haunts...and thats only because he has all my links on his comp. I lived with him for a bit and used his comp. I am not sure he would even think to tell anyone online if I was very ill or dead. My parents sure as heck would not know to tell anyone. They have met the Shanty folks and Layla but do not have any way to call them.

Have any of you ever thought about it? Would you care enough to want your online friends to know if something happened? Do most people have a way to let the online friends know?

This is somehthing that has been bothering me for a bit. If something happened to me it would be just like... I vanished. This is especially bad because most of the people I care about are friends from online.

**note: I did not think this really belonged in Sci and Phil, and it is not a standard poll with set answers. I supose gen chat is best for it.

Something like this has happened to one of my friends. She's been offline for a month or two, and I'm worrying. :( I dunno what it is. I'm hoping her mom just gambled most of the money off and they couldn't afford the internet or something....

"I dunno, maybe she died or somet'in'! Those coconutz wer spookee. Ooh, pocket lint!"

"Letz play pocket lint soccer! *flicks the ball of lint around over a table*"

"Me first, me first!"

See...that is what I am talking about. We all take breaks on occasion, or get tied up in real life...but what if something more serious happened. Would anyone know :(

I really hope your friend is OK and just busy with life.

So do I. I've been trying to figure out where I wrote her phone number, but I can't find it. :(
Oh, and to the topic, I hope the people on my list would figure out when the computer has sat on the away status for over a week, but maybe that's giving them too much credit. :P I remember when I was offline for two days.... Everyone thought I was dead. :|

I don't think it would be a problem for me... unless the house burned down with everyone in it...

Though I really would hate for something to happen to someone else with know way of me knowing... I'd probably get worried and look into it eventually if it seemed serious though... =(

Sorry to make anyone feel bad. It is just something that is bothering me quite a bit.

Spanks you have the advantage of living with 4 others who all are comp literate and who also post in the same places you do. My dad is comp literate...but not aware really of forums or ICQ. Mother is a total basket case and can't be trusted to look after a plant much less be responsible for telling friends about the fate of her daughter. She would not remember that people might care about me.

None of the people on this forum would find out but there is a chance, since a good friend of mine from another site calls me alot that they would know.

Being sick these last few days, I have indeed thought about this, and I've come to the conclusion that although several real life friends know I post here, I don't think any of them would think to come here and let others know.

Several forum members (including MB & Circe) have my phone number, and I would hope one of them might get curious enough to try and track me down after a while.

You know, I thought about this myself before, but when it comes down to it I think that there just aren't that many people who would morn my passing as there are who would simply say "what a pity" and move on. I've often thought of leaving a not for my mom so that she can inform everyone should something happen to me, but I don't think I'd want her to tell people she doesn't even know about her son's fate.

BTW, you're not ill or anything, are you? Starting a convo like this can sure get people worried.

Aiyana would tell you if something happened to me.

Or she might just assume my identity. We'll never know!
