Re: [FFXI] General Chat
Well, trading quest items to NPCs in repeatable quests gets you fame. So that would mean not selling those items, even if they do fetch a higher price on the AH (unless it's alot more, like those silkthreads)
Work is the curse of the drinking classes
Catamaul, if you thought just waiting for the ferry was immersive wait until you get attacked by pirates!
My first trip ever on the ferry from Selbina to Mhaura involved us getting boarded by pirates. The fight lasted a good 15 minutes and basically involved all of us low-level characters hiding in the pilot's cabin while a lvl 70whm and and level 50 paladin destroyed them all. It is still one of the greatest moments in my FFXI experience.
If you do get boarded by pirates (and you'll know because the music changes to something ominous and you'll see the pirate ship slowly pull up along side the ferry), get off the main deck and pray you don't get followed (I'd advise going up to the pilot's cabin so you can still see what's going on).
On the Mule Character issue... I don't have one but I know others who do and its a pretty good idea. You can set up your mule as a bazaar while you're off hunting. That's 30 slots that you can set in some populated area of town to sell items. My friend did this while he went partying and when he came back his mule had made over 15k gil for him.
I've also seen people use their mules as WHMs set up macros to follow them around and heal them. I thought that was particularly clever.

Yeah, you missed it - Phoenix is the server to be on. It's the server that Sagus (Greg Dean's character) and a whole bunch of others are on.
And I already posted my character profile, although I think it's a little out of date now.

Grah. I finally got FFXI and have been playing it for a day and a half... restarted a few times, actually. I ended up on the Fairy server now... I've hit lvl 4 as a black mage tarutaru
Grr... the only annoying thing is that anytime I run through larger areas of the towns, I lag horribly... I was disconnected for the first time tonight. Phooey.

Egon: Notice the vacant stare, the completely mindless look. That could only mean one thing.
Winston: She's from California?
Egon: No. She's been hypnotized.

I got this game about a week ago, and I need to meet people who I can play the game with. I'm on phoenix, and I'm in Bastok or the surrounding areas most of the time. My character name is Eratosthenes; maybe some of you have seen me already.
This is a block of text that can be added to posts I make. There is a 500 character limit.

HELP!!!
I am so frustrated! In the middle of the game, the program just shuts off. It does not disconnect me. It just goes back to my windows desktop. THe software just quits. I can log back on and play so it is something specific that is kicking me out.
I thought the problem may have been with the rendering of many many people because it was happening around the AH, and sometimes when I am in the middle of large battles, but last night it was just me on a chocobo in the middle of the marshlands (not crowded) and the gae just shut off.
Has this happened to anyone?
What might the cause be?
Could it be the sound?
Other clues:
Sometimes I cast a spell and can't hear it until it finally casts (this is when I am in a party)
I am running on:
2.13 OC'd AMD 2600 XP Processor (with 200 FSB)
512 M memory
64 M Hercules Prophet II video card
The FFXI Benchmark gave me a madium score (I do not remember the number)
Should I lower the video settings? I already have the shadows off.
Thoughts?

This happens to me occasionally too, but usually on the order of once a week or so. It seems to happen most often when the game is rendering an effect, like an enemy attack or a spell or something.
I don't know how frequently this is happening to you, but I can't really give any suggestions on how to fix it. The best guess is a driver issue or something, but that's just a guess. I don't actually know what's wrong - sorry.

The game will only play a certain number of sounds at once, this is normal. Sometimes the spell-casting sound effect just gets overlooked.Other clues:

Re: [FFXI] General Chat
It was the video card (or lack there of). I had cranked up the resolution settings and messed with some of the compression settings as well and I think that was it. I took the Play Online Configuration/Setup and used the restore default function and it seems to be working. If I make any tweaks now, I will do it one at a time to see what is hanging me up.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Yeah. But something you may want to do, is if you get into a really crowded area, you can config your system so that it does not display other people's battle effects. I can't remember the exact route to it, but you can set it so that visual and sound effects of a selected type do not display on your comp. I've found it to be useful in crowded areas like Crawler's Nest, The Kazham jungles, and Qufim. Keeps the spam down. And less spam = more happiness.dmpotter wrote: The game will only play a certain number of sounds at once, this is normal. Sometimes the spell-casting sound effect just gets overlooked.
We are all aware that the senses can be deceived, the eyes fooled; but how can we be sure our senses are not being deceived at any particular time, or even all the time? Might I just be a brain in a tank somewhere? Tricked all my life into believing in the events of this world by some insane computer? And does my life gain or lose meaning based on my reaction to such solipsism?

Re: [FFXI] General Chat
I just got FFXI a couple days ago, and finally finished the updates (phew). I know I'm a bit late to start playing, but better late than never eh?
Sadly, I won't be on the Phoenix server as I have some buddies that want me on the Ragnarok server. I tried out the rerolling technique (from last year) for 45 minutes straight and still didn't get Ragnarok, is there a faster way to delete a character than the "30 seconds" way? I know they don't want you to accidentally delete characters but I think that was just a wee much.
Edit: Never mind, managed to find it earlier in the thread how to make the timer go down fast:
PS: If you don't wanna wait 30 seconds for your character to delete, Hold D On the keyboard (Or L3 PS2 Users), and keep pressing enter (x button PS2 users). It'll skip seconds, like in a arcade (game over, press button to skip the count).
