*EDIT* Ph34r my Gunslinger Girl shirt I made!

Post by FireAza » Wed Jan 21, 2004 12:04 pm

I don't really care how this is done, but I'd very much like it if someone could enlarge this picture

Image

To a measurement of 11.693 inches in width and 8.017 inches in hight, suitable for printing, with as little blockyness/blurriness as possible. Seeing that I don't have a clue how to do this in Photoshop, I thought I could look to here for m4d skillz. Or if we can't do that, any advice on scanning it? It always turns out funny when I do it. 'Sanks.

*EDIT* Right so the shirt is made, ph34r my sexyness!

It doesn't work that way Aza ....... You can enlarge a image but you can't add resolution with out a serious drop in image quality.

This work at all?
Image

To keep it porportional, it doesn't quite come out 11.63 x 8.013 (or whatever you wanted) it's more like 11.63 x 7.9968

Edit: Fixed my link. Was showin' a big red X.

Well, maybe you could hook it up to a projector, project it on a wall, and then take a picture of the larger image. =P

Or print it out with a high quality printer and then scan it at a high resolution.

EDIT: Actually, I just set it as my desktop pic, and it enlarged quite nicely without too much loss of quality.

This is what I did

Filter: sharpen more
Then i turned down brightness a bit and upped contrast a bit.

[edit] someone can probably do a better job, im not really good at this. Any pointers?

mikehendo, damn straight it is!
Infin8Cyn, The P90 looks good, but there's these rainbow looking areas around the hair. Close though.
Long Quan, yeah, I've already tried to print it to photo paper with a good printer, and it looks very smick, but it goes all crappy when I enlarge it with my scanner.
Jamie, It's a tad bit blocky....
The reason I'm being fussy, is I wanna make a cool t-shirt out of the image and thus I need a good quality image to use.

This would probably be a better starting place...

Some non-lazy person just has to make the background black.

even the biggest one printed at full resolution on a standard desktop printer (300 DPI) would only be 5X4inches. You could probably get away with 220 DPI and it would still look decent. Anything much below that looks like crap though.

Well, the internet is a pretty crappy place to go for high quality pics in the first place.

Yeah, just thought I'd clear a few things up. I'm looking to print this on an A4 sheet of t-shirt paper, so any size that makes the best use of a sheet of A4 is what I'm after. Accer, that wallpaper would be perfect, if only it was black background (I'm printing it to a black shirt, so it needs to blend) and maybe if the flame was a same size as the other pic. I guess you can always superimpose that onto an edited version, any thoughts?

My crack at it. Pixel resize, A couple of smoothings, some contrast, color, brightness adjustment, a couple of sharpenings, and an edge preserving smooth.

I once heard that the best method for scaling something up was not to do it all at a time, but in small increments, e.g. 110% several times. I tried it on this image, while it did look very smooth (no blockiness whatsoever), the picture was completely blurry - no chance of smoothing. Still, It may look cool if you take the "smooth blussy" image as a backdrop, and then superimpose the small one. But that's mostly for Desktops, not T-Shirts.

Another suggestion, which I do not have the tools for: Separate the muzzle flash from the girl (and gun), then vectorize her. Lots of flat shaded areas should make this easy enough, and vectors can be scaled at will without lss of sharpness.

You may have to reach some sort of compromise with the eyes or the gun, but it should be doable...
